India’s first banking robot called Lakshmi has made her formal debut
on Thursday in Chennai city. This is a powerful artificial intelligence
powered robot and reportedly the first such on-site bank helper.
Kumbakonam-based City Union Bank launched the artificial intelligence
powered robot and also plans to launch her in other branches.
What you need to
know about ‘LAKSHMI’
1. It took over six
months for Lakshmi to be developed; she can intelligently answer on over 125
subjects.
2. She can answer queries such account
balance and the interest rates on home loans and many such queries related to
the payments or possible charges which are incurred on the fixed deposit
closures etc. Lakshmi has also been programmed for connecting to the core
banking solutions to give out details about transaction history as well!
3. She can give real-time updates of
foreign exchange movement, interest rates at banks for various asset classes
like educational, personal, two-wheeler, home loans or charges on
deposits/withdrawals.
4. Any sensitive financial information
such as the account details are reportedly displayed discreetly onto the
robot’s screen and this is not voiced.
5. She can save work
for three to four persons; the robot would be integrated with the bank's
automation process.
6. Lakshmi can currently speak English,
gestures, turns around, and engages in a life-like manner in conversations.
7. Unlike most robots, Lakshmi's speech
isn't formal but more relaxed and casual.
8. If Lakshmi can't answer a question,
she asks the customer to contact the branch manager. The bank would collect all
the questions Lakshmi was unable to answer and equip her with better data sets
so that she can serve better.
9. The artificial intelligence powered
robot can continuously learn from customers; the more interactions with
clients, the better the robot gets.
10. Soon,
she will also start speaking in Tamil.
City Union Bank plans for 25-30 robots deployed at its key
branches by the end of 2016 if the robot proves a hit with the customers.
HDFC Bank is also experimenting with robots to answer queries and is
testing a robot at its innovation lab.
